Start with the cheap stuff: filter, spray arms, detergent
Pull the bottom rack. At the floor of the tub there's a cylinder filter you can twist out by hand. Rinse it under the tap with a soft brush. Labels, seeds, and grease build a mat there that starves the pump. Next, spin both spray arms with a finger. They should turn freely. Hold one up to the light and look for holes plugged with hard-water crust or toothpicks. A wooden pick clears them. Then check your detergent. Old powder clumps and never dissolves. Fresh pods stored somewhere dry work better than a box that has sat under the sink since spring.
Water that is not hot enough, or not enough of it
Most dishwashers want incoming water around 120 degrees. Run the kitchen sink hot until it steams, then start the cycle. That alone fixes a lot of complaints in homes where the water heater is far from the kitchen. Also listen during the wash. You should hear a steady swishing spray, not a thin trickle. Weak sound can mean the fill valve is scaling up or the inlet screen is choked with mineral grit. Under your sink, check that the small shutoff valve feeding the dishwasher is turned all the way open — someone may have nudged it while storing cleaning supplies.
Loading habits and rinse aid
Overloading is the quiet culprit. Tall pots on the bottom rack block the spray tower, so the top rack gets almost nothing. Bowls nested together shield each other. Face soiled surfaces toward the center. Leave a finger of space between items. Skip the heavy pre-rinse — modern detergents need some soil to grab onto — but do scrape solids into the trash. Keep the rinse aid reservoir filled if your machine has one. In hard-water areas it does real work, breaking surface tension so water sheets off instead of drying into spots. Also run a cleaner cycle monthly to strip grease from the tub walls and door gasket.
