What "runs but no heat" actually tells us

When the drum turns, the motor and belt are fine. That rules out a big chunk of the machine right away. Heat is a separate circuit. In an electric dryer, that circuit needs both legs of 240-volt power, a working heating element, and a set of safety switches that all have to agree. In a gas dryer, it needs a valve, an igniter, and a flame sensor working in sequence. One open link anywhere in that chain and you get exactly what you're seeing: a clothes tumbler with no warmth. Good news is that a no-heat fault is usually one part, not a dying machine.

Start with airflow — the cheapest cause by far

Blocked venting is the cause we find most often, and it costs the least to fix. Lint packs into the duct, the hood flap sticks shut, or a crushed foil transition hose chokes the run. Some dryers then trip a thermal fuse or high-limit switch to protect themselves, and heat stops entirely. Salt air out here corrodes exterior vent hoods until the flap won't swing free. Long duct runs through unheated crawlspaces collect moisture and sludge. If your last few loads took longer and longer before heat quit completely, airflow is the first place we look.

Power, then heating parts

Electric dryers pull power through two 30-amp breakers or fuses. If one leg drops out, the drum still spins on 120 volts but the element gets nothing. A half-tripped breaker looks perfectly normal on the panel. Next up the list: the thermal fuse, the cycling thermostat, the high-limit switch, and the heating element itself. Elements crack or burn open, often after years of restricted airflow. Gas machines follow their own path — igniter, coils, flame sensor. All of these live behind panels and near live terminals, so testing them is a service call, not a weekend project.

Safe checks you can do right now

Pull the plug or shut the breaker before touching anything. Clean the lint screen and rinse it under hot water — fabric softener leaves an invisible film, and our hard water adds scale that seals the mesh. Disconnect the flex hose at the wall and reach in with a vacuum. Go outside and check that the vent flap opens when the dryer runs. Look for kinks behind the machine. Reset both dryer breakers fully off, then on. Confirm the setting isn't Air Fluff or Tumble Dry Low. If heat still never arrives, stop there and call us.

We'd rather you didn't. If a safety switch tripped because of a blocked vent, running the machine keeps stressing it and can build lint heat in the duct. Unplug it until the cause is found.

Why did it lose heat right after a storm?

Power surges and brownouts can knock out one leg of a 240-volt circuit or blow the thermal fuse. It's a common pattern after outages. A voltage check at the machine confirms it quickly.

Is a no-heat dryer worth repairing?

Usually yes. Fuses, thermostats, and elements are standard parts on most machines. We'll tell you honestly if the drum, bearings, or cabinet are too far gone to justify the work.
