What "runs but stays cold" actually tells us

A microwave has two separate jobs. One circuit spins the turntable, runs the fan, and lights the bulb. A second, much higher-voltage circuit makes the actual microwaves. When you see motion and light but get no heat, the first circuit is fine and the second one has quit. That's useful. It rules out the door switches on some models, the control board on many, and the outlet entirely. It points us at the high-voltage side, which sits behind panels homeowners should never remove. Even unplugged, parts in there hold a charge long after the cord comes out of the wall.

Start with the simple stuff: your test was wrong, or the door is

Cheapest cause first. A big cold bowl of dense food in a low-power setting can genuinely feel unheated after two minutes. Run a real test instead: one cup of room-temperature water, high power, one minute. If it's not noticeably warm, the unit isn't heating. Next, look at the door. If the latch doesn't pull the door flush, or a hinge has sagged, some models will still run the fan and light while blocking the heating circuit. The usual culprits after that

Three families cover most of these calls. First, a blown high-voltage fuse or a failed diode — small parts, and the rest of the oven keeps working, which is exactly why you see lights and hear the fan. Second, the magnetron itself, the tube that generates the microwaves. These wear out, and hard-water steam plus grease buildup shortens their life. Third, the high-voltage transformer or capacitor. On over-the-range units we also see thermal cutouts that tripped because the vent above your cooktop is clogged with grease and the cavity overheated. That last one sometimes resets, then trips again a week later.

What you can safely check yourself

Stick to things outside the cabinet. Plug the microwave into a different outlet to rule out a weak circuit. Wipe the door seal and the flat surface it meets — burnt-on food there keeps the door from seating. Look inside the cavity for scorch marks or a bubbled patch on the small mica plate on the side wall; that's a real finding worth telling us. Pull the vent filters on an over-the-range model and wash them. Listen while it runs: a loud buzz or hum that wasn't there before means something. Do not remove any screws or panels. Do not reach behind the control panel.

Depends on which part failed and the age of the unit. A fuse or diode is a small repair. A magnetron in an older countertop model often isn't worth it. Built-in and over-the-range units usually are. We'll tell you which.

Is a microwave that runs but doesn't heat dangerous to use?
